Alienware 17 R4. Powerful with Simple Elegant Styling

By TechAvenue. 06/24/2017

Today we review the Alienware 17 R4 with the  newly update Kaby Lake processor with the core i7 7700 HQ, with nVidia’s GTX 1060 6GB. This is the 2017 model that has the Core i7 7700HQ compared to last year’s model that had the Core i7 6700HQ. We will be comparing the Alienware 17 R4 directly to Asus ROG G752VT with a 970M 3GB and compare how these two laptops perform. Note, the ASUS ROG G752VT can be found with the GTX 1060 however it uses the same chassis as our review model with the 970M so thermals should be similar if not worse on the Asus ROG G752VT with the 1060.  So, keep that in mind when choosing a 17” laptop. Speaking of thermals, Alienware 17 R4 has one of the best cooling in the market. Under Gaming load we saw Max CPU temperature of 80C with room temperature in the late 80 degrees Fahrenheit range and Max GPU temperature of in the late 60Cs. Compare that with the Asus ROG with max temperature above the 91+C range and GPU max temperature of 73C. So, there is significant difference in temperature, especially the CPU, in favor of the Alienware 17 R4.

With respect to build quality, the Alienware 17 R4 is easily be better build. Not to say that the Asus ROG G752VT is a poor build but it often feels like plastic where as the Alienware build is solid and has a very premium feel to the laptop.
